CONGESTION MANAGEMENT

The Smart Routes to School Program was developed by the 50 Corridor Transportation Management Association (TMA) with support from a steering committee consisting of representatives from jurisdictions along the 50 corridor, local communities, the business and development community, and officials in the areas of transportation, law enforcement, health, and education.

The program provides information, encouragement and resources for individual schools to begin exploring Smart Routes to School. A “Smart Route” is any trip that doesn’t involve one parent driving one kid to school.

Smart routes are:
• Walking
• Biking
• Riding the School Bus or Public Transit
• Carpooling with other students, or School Pool (more)
• or, any combination of the above

It is up to each school to determine its leadership model and level of participation in Smart Routes. Efforts can be volunteer-led, staff-led, PTA-led, or implemented by a community organization. Smart Routes Handbooks are now being distributed to El Dorado County Schools.

The Goal of the Smart Routes to School Program is to engage and support more than 80% of students in their efforts to explore smarter routes to school. The goal will be tracked through a web-based program which will also be a resource for communication, education, and recognition.

The interactive, kid-friendly website is now operational at www.smartroutestoschool.com.

SCHOOL POOL
School Pool is a program which provides carpool ridematch lists to parents with students attending the same school(s) throughout El Dorado County. School Pool is provided by the EDCTC in cooperation with local school districts.

511: COMPREHENSIVE SACRAMENTO REGION TRAVEL INFORMATION

Travelers in the Sacramento region and beyond can now dial one easy-to-remember telephone number for complete, comprehensive traveler information: 511.

511 provides access to information about all modes of travel: traffic conditions for commuters, bus and light rail information for more than 20 transit agencies, Paratransit services for the elderly and disabled, ridesharing information and information on commuting by bike. The telephone service is available in English and Spanish.

The Sacramento region, which includes El Dorado, Placer, Sacramento, Sutter, Yolo and Yuba counties, is the primary service area for the phone service. The number also links callers to 511 services in the Bay Area, Nevada and Oregon, as well as Butte and Glenn counties.

In conjunction with the phone service, this Web site can help users plan their daily commute, access transit providers, find a carpool partner, and learn about bicycling as a commute option. With the traffic information on this site, you can check your commute options and know the road before you go. Once behind the wheel, you can call 511 for traffic updates.

511 is a joint project between the Sacramento Area Council of Governments (SACOG), and Caltrans and other partners. For more information about the 511 service, visit the About 511 section of the website or the FAQs.

Remember, want to know about traffic, transit, rideshare, and bicycling, call 511 or visit www.sacregion511.org.

Northside School students, teachers, and parents gathered along the Olmstead Loop Trail in Cool to walk 1.5 miles to school in celebration of 2007 International Walk-to-School Day.

WALK-TO-SCHOOL DAY
October 3, 2007

Professionals across the world recognize the international trend of childhood obesity and recommend walking to school as a way of counteracting the risks of an unhealthy lifestyle - especially in childhood. Research tells us that childhood obesity levels are on the increase and children are less physically active than ever before. Walking to school is an excellent way to improve health and reduce school-site congestion.

This year's event had a huge turnout with hundreds of students throughout El Dorado County taking advantage of walking to school. We would like to thank the sponsors who helped to make this effort a success.

EL DORADO COUNTY GOVERNMENT CENTER TRANSPORTATION DEMAND MANAGEMENT (TDM) PROGRAM

EDCTC worked closely with the 50 Corridor Transportation Management Agency (www.50corridor.com) to develop a TDM program for the El Dorado County Government Center. The program was funded by an AB2766 Air Quality Grant awarded by El Dorado County Air Quality Management District. A Commuter Guide was developed for employees of the Government Center containing information on ridesharing, vanpooling, bicycling, and walking. A Transportation Assessment Report highlighting some potential improvements that could be made at the Government Center to encourage alternative transportation was also developed. As of August 2006, 199 employees from the Government Center have signed up for the El Dorado County Commuter Club. The commuter club is not exclusive to the Government Center. You can sign up to explore ridesharing throughout the entire County. Visit Commuter Club Registration to register for the commuter club.
