girlsonbikes EDCTC Conducted Bikeability and Walkability Audits at Area Schools
EDCTC was awarded Federal Safe Routes to Schools funding to conduct Bikeability and Walkability Audits at 53 schools on the western slope of El Dorado County. Audits included the following:
  • Each school was visited by a qualified professional and assessed for bikeability and walkability.
  • A map was created for the general location of the school and photos were taken of the school site and its surroundings.
  • A checklist was completed to determine the presence of sidewalks, bike paths, informal routes, nearby development density/land use, crosswalks, signage, major intersections, and transit stops.
  • Each school was assessed for potential improvements and subsequently ranked for bikeability and walkability by existing conditions.
  • Necessary and potential improvements were detailed for each school site, as well as preliminary cost estimates for development of needed improvements.
  • Potential projects and improvements were prioritized based on needed safety improvements and the potential for an increase in numbers of students biking and walking to school.
The document will be a useful guide for future capital improvements and implementation of programs to encourage walking and biking to school at the appropriate locations.
